Tree Care

Best Practices for Growing and Caring for Your Penderlea Farms Heritage Live Oak

Planting

Dig a hole wide enough to fit tree but no deeper than the root ball to allow for proper root spread. Place tree so top of root ball is slightly above soil surface to prevent settling. Backfill with native soil. Water thoroughly after planting and apply a 2–4 inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk.

Watering

Water deeply every other day for the first few months, then reduce to once per week as roots establish. For established trees, deep watering every few weeks during dry periods helps maintain health.

Fertilizing

Fertilize in early spring and late fall using a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for trees. Apply fertilizer evenly around the drip line, avoiding direct contact with the trunk. Avoid excessive nitrogen and always water thoroughly after applying fertilizer to aid absorption.

Pruning

Prune in late winter to maintain health and minimize disease risk. Focus on removing dead, diseased, or crossing branches, maintaining a strong central leader, and raising the canopy as needed. Never top a live oak & avoid excessive pruning.
